Let these dialogues inspire you to live and love a little more this year

As I sit in my bed, watching Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani for the umpteenth time—I can’t help but think of every bucket list experience I am yet tick off, the people I am yet to meet and the adventures I am yet to have. Films and shows have a charming and funny way to romanticise life itself—every dinner, every holiday and every date. They inspire us in ways more than one. In fact, they hype us up for everything we want to do. So, we took a look back at some of the most iconic dialogues from films and shows that gave us all the feels and made us want to jump off a plane, go diving with dolphins, make that first move or quit that toxic workplace—to live the most wholesome and fulfilling life that we can.

Dead Poets Society

Life

“Carpe Diem. Seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.”

“Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it all. Thoreau said, ‘Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.’ Don’t be resigned to that. Break out!”

It seemed entirely impossible to choose just one dialogue from the Robin Williams-starrer that continues to inspire many of all ages. Come back to this film that is all things comfortable, on those days when you’re tired of the everyday hustle.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

“Main udna chahta hoon,
Daudna chahta hoon,
Girna bhi chahta hoon…
Bas, rukna nahi chahta.”

In the midst of snow-capped mountains, two strangers-turned friends, Bunny and Naina discuss what they want out of life. Like many others, I remember the goosebumps I had when I first heard the dialogue. It hits home and urges the adventure bug in you to go out there and soar and fly in this adventure called life.

Bold Type

“I expect you to have adventures. I expect you to fall in love, get your hearts broken. I expect you to have sex with the wrong people, have sex with the right people. To make mistakes and make amends, take a leap and make a splash. And I expect you to unleash holy hell on anybody who tries to hold you back.”

When Jaqueline Carlyle of Scarlet magazine from the show the Bold Type said this, there must’ve been only few who didn’t feel inspired. Her speech normalises mistakes and encourages love in all forms. Let this be the push you need to take that leap of faith.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

“Sieze the day my friend,
Pehle iss din ko puri tarah se jiyo,
Phir chaalis ke baare main sochna.”

“Apne kaam ko apni life ke saath confuse mat karo,
Tumhara kaam tumhari life nahi, sirf uska ek hissa hain.”

Again, to choose just one from this cult would be unfair to the film itself. Every character, every song, and every dialogue from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara brought with it lessons for a lifetime and hard-hitting reminders.

Mamma Mia

Life

“I don’t know what the future holds, but life is short, the world is wide and I wanna make some memories.”

“The best things in life, the very best things happen unexpectedly.”

Picture this: A loose white shirt, denim dungarees, a glass of wine and your best girlfriends on the little island of Kalaokiri in Greece, having the time of your life. We’re totally digging it. (See what we did there?)

Clouds

Life

“And I want everyone to know that you don’t have to find out you’re dying to really start living.”

Based on the life story of singer, Zach Sobiech, the film Clouds follows the all-too-short-lived journey of the teenager who became a victim of cancer. Deeply passionate about music, Sobiech realises he has little time to follow his dream and releases his own music album, which becomes a viral sensation. Here’s your cue to follow what you’re passionate about because life it too short.

Tick, Tick, Boom

Life

“Are you letting yourself be led by fear or by love?”

A pertinent question to ask yourself, every now and then to be sure—of yourself and what you want. Tick, Tick, Boom is based on the life of playwright Jonathan Larson, who wrote numerous musicals throughout his lifetime, never giving up on his ideas and stories, only to become immensely popular and loved for his Broadway musical Rent after he died.

The Bucket List

Life

“One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.”

“I’m not proud of everything I did, but I’m pretty sure I’d do it all again.”

Starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, The Bucket List follows the journey of two terminally ill men—with only six months to live—who decide to explore life and create a bucket list filled with adventures that they had never had before. Here’s a pro tip: You only regret the chances you didn’t take, so go out there and do your thing!

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Life

“I’m going to Paris. I don’t feel like I have a life here anymore. I’m unhappy and I’m tired of being unhappy so I booked myself a flight for tomorrow night.”
Amen.

No one could have said it better than Rose Weissman from the show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel who enters the world of stand-up comedy after her husband leaves her for his secretary and realises she craves financial independence and more.

Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris

“You live to work. We work to live.”

“We’re on the precipice of the rest of our lives.”

A much needed reminder for all you workaholics out there to live your life beyond your corner office or grey cubicle. Make a choice for yourself and your happiness—just like Emily does (usually).
