Working in corporate is not for the faint-hearted. While boomers and millennials dominated the workspace, Gen Z is taking over and evidently making their mark. This generation may have its quirks, but they surely bring a lot to the table. From their deep emphasis on mental health to their tech-savvy working techniques, one thing is certain—Gen Z is here to make things bigger and better. 

Here’s all that millennials can learn from Gen Z, especially in the workplace.

Reject the hustle culture


One of the defining characteristics of Gen Z is their commitment to work-life balance. They value their careers, but they also value their time and well-being, which is why they reject the hustle culture that demands putting all of their energy solely into work. Instead, they embrace a more balanced approach, understanding that personal fulfilment and mental health are key to long-term success and productivity. By setting clear boundaries, Gen Z challenges the notion that constant hustle is the only path to achievement. Their approach not only prevents burnout but also promotes healthier work practices that boost job satisfaction and effectiveness.

Learn to maintain work-life balance 

Once people kickstart their careers, they become consumed by long office hours and struggle to carve out time for themselves and their loved ones. This is an unhealthy habit that diminishes one’s personal well-being and identity. As mentioned before, Gen Z excels at maintaining a work-life balance. They value ‘me’ time, refuse monotonous routines without breaks, and prioritise rest and relaxation, which is not to take away from the fact that they are incredibly dedicated and hard-working.

Be open-minded and adaptable

Gen Z might have a complex relationship with the internet, but they excel in leveraging technology. They have a natural affinity for technology and are adept at using tools like chatbots, cloud-based AI, and other advanced technologies to boost productivity and efficiency. They are also open-minded and adaptable, allowing them to quickly integrate new tools and methods, making them versatile in dynamic work environments. Clearly, they have a lot to offer and that’s something to learn from them. 

Don't be afraid to voice out your opinions


Gen Z values authenticity and rejects the idea of being confined to narrow expectations. They are apologetic about who they are and what they believe in, be it advocating for the environment, equality, mental health, animal rights, and/or the well-being of others. While they respect diverse values, they are also quick to call out unethical behaviour. Their willingness to stand up for what they believe in is a powerful trait that can inspire a more transparent and principled workplace. 

Advocate mental health 

In today’s fast-paced work environment, with constant deadlines and client pressure, stress is a common challenge. And so it is crucial for companies to empathise with their employee's struggles, whilst promoting self-care and providing support. Gen Z is leading the way by advocating for mental health awareness, normalizing discussions, and breaking down stigma. They are paving the way for a more supportive and understanding work environment, where an employee's well-being is prioritised.
