Comforting movies to snuggle up with on a rainy day

Rainy days and feel-good films go hand in hand. They make you smile, cry, and maybe even sing along, which is the perfect way to spend a rainy day indoors. From High School Musical’s nostalgic tunes to Nancy Meyers’ captivating narratives, these movies are like a warm hug on a gloomy day. So grab your blanket and some hot cocoa and settle in for a magical monsoon movie marathon.

The Holiday (2006)

This movie is without a doubt, one of the most heartwarming movies out there! While it is supposed to be a holiday special, this one is a year-round favourite (credits to Jude Law, of course). The story follows Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet), two heartbroken women who decide to swap homes to escape their holiday blues. While Amanda moves in to a cosy English cottage, Iris enjoys the luxuries of a sunny LA mansion. And although the two women decided to stray far away from men, fate certainly had other plans (enter Jude Law and Jack Black).

Little Women (2019)

The 2019 adaption of Little Women beautifully captures the essence of Louisa May Alcott's novel. It centres on themes of family, love, and resilience, which is portrayed through the struggles and triumphs of the March sisters, Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Beth (Eliza Scanlen), and Amy (Florence Pugh). The movie is a heartwarming treat even on your gloomiest days.

A Cinderella Story (2004)

The A Cinderella Story series are all great films and ideal for brightening up a rainy day. However, the first film, starring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, is a fan favourite, and a tough one to beat. Offering a modern twist on the classic fairytale, the film centres on Samantha "Sam" (Duff) who is constantly antagonised by her evil stepmother and ditsy stepsisters after her father's death. Her only solace is her father's diner family, her best friend Carter, and a secret online crush (Murray) that will unveil itself at a magical ball. With its blend of romance, humour, and friendship this is a great watch for a rainy day. You could even turn it into a marathon with other films in the series such as Another Cinderella Story and A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song.

High School Musical Series (2006-2008)

If you grew up in the early 2000s, then the High School Musical (movie) series is just what you need for a heady dose of nostalgia on a gloomy day. With an ensemble cast including Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel, and Monique Coleman among others, the series offers a blend of catchy tunes, dance routines, and loads of high school drama that is sure to keep you entertained on a cosy day in.

Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)

Fashion, romance, and light-hearted comedy are a deadly (read as: entertaining) combination, and among our favourite genres! And that's exactly what Confessions of a Shopaholic is. The plot centres around journalist Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher), a shopaholic with massive credit debt and a dream to work for the coveted fashion magazine, Alette. Amid her hilarious attempts to manage her shopping addiction and flee her credit collector, Rebecca ends up working for a finance magazine as an advice columnist (oh the irony!), where she meets a charming British man who's almost as alluring as the next fashion sale. If want a comforting movie for a cosy day in, then this is it.

27 Dresses (2008)

If you've ever been a bridesmaid or aspire to be one, then you'll find this movie particularly appealing.  This light-hearted rom-com follows Jane (Katherine Heigl), a young woman who has been a bridesmaid at 27 weddings and is about to reach number 28 when her sister gets engaged to Jane's boss, (whom the latter has always been in love with). The humour, romance, and teary moments are truly palpable making 27 Dresses a must-watch for all seasons!

Your Name (2019)

Blending romance and fantasy, Your Name follows teenagers, Mitsuha and Taki who mysteriously swap bodies and lives. As they navigate this unusual situation, they end up developing a deeper connection. The film's touching romance, beautiful visuals, and emotional depth make for a cosy, soothing experience perfect for a rainy day.

A Silent Voice (2016)

A Silent Voice is a tender and emotional romance. It centres on the lives of Shoya and Shoko, who reunite after a troubled past. They work through their shared history ultimately forming a heartfelt connection. The film's romance, coupled with its beautiful animation and themes of forgiveness, makes it a perfect companion for the monsoon season.

A Whisker Away (2020)

A Whisker Away is a sweet, sappy, romance, revolving around Miyo, a peculiar girl who turns into a cat in order to get her crush's attention. Despite its unusual plot, this movie is a tale of love, self-discovery, and magic, making it quite a comforting escape.
