If you looked up 'subversive' in the dictionary, you'd be met with a photo of Miley Cyrus; from twerking with Robin Thicke to smoking on stage, the Disney alum knows how to make a headline... or two. And that doesn't fall short with a dramatic beauty moment, either, for today we're met with one of Miley's most controversial hairstyles to date. Enter: Electric shock, bouffant 70s realness.
Taking to the 66th Annual Grammy Awards [4 February, 2024], Miley went above and beyond in all departments. Not only did she win the Best Pop Solo Performance award for "Flowers", give us the PDA moment of the night (Maxx Morando, we're looking @ you) and wear a nearly, slightly, ~almost~ naked chainmail gold dress *aaaand breath* but Miley also provided a hair look to steal the spotlight of the entire show. Her recently dyed brunette locks were teased to the high heavens for a voluminous blowout like no other.
As her very own godmother, Dolly Parton, famously once said: "The bigger the hair, the closer to God."
And she's certainly knocking on the gates of heaven with this look.
As shown, for the coveted event, the singer wore her hair with the most extreme proportions, styled in a quaffed back bouncy blowout. And while we like to think the look was inspired by the recent mob wives fashion x beauty aesthetic trend (read: big, big locks) or even Jane Fonda's iconic Barbarella hair from the late 60s, Miley's hairstylist revealed otherwise.
Bob Recine, Miley's hairstylist of eight years, told Byrdie that this hairstyle took inspiration from "a punk, Raquel Welch from the '70s."
Continuing, on Instagram, Bob revealed more on the details of how to achieve the look. "This year we decided we wanted something dry and bigger, more fuller hair, but sexy and tousled and touchable," he writes in the caption of his post.
And dry, big, sexy, tousled and touchable her hair certainly was! Get your backcombs out, girlies, because we're about to raise the stakes... and some hairs.
