Paris Men’s Fashion Week kicked off last night with the Louis Vuitton spring/summer 2024 collection—one of the most eagerly awaited events of the entire menswear showcase as it's Pharell Willaims' debut show as creative director of menswear for the prestigious French fashion house. And it wasn't just fashion editors and lovers of the brand who turned out to see, the front row was packed full of celebs including the likes of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Rihanna, Zendaya, and Kim Kardashian.
Kardashian naturally repped the brand, wearing a crop top and leggings in a digitised camo print that's a new textile for Louis Vuitton and was introduced in the showcased collection. However, it was Kim's choice of accessory that has raised a few eyebrows on the Cosmo Fashion Desk. She added an oversized, fluffy bum bag in the same digitised camo pattern to her 'fit.
Let us explain, as it's not the bum bag style we take issue with. Formerly the go-to accessory of choice for dads at a theme park, in recent years the humble bum bag has been reclaimed by fashion girlies after a super practical, hands-free option. And it's not hard to see why. More secure than a cross-body design (we'd like to see any would-be pickpockets take off with our belongings when they're literally strapped to us), big enough for all your essentials, but compact enough to remain lightweight, a bum bag ticks off lots of boxes.
The only difference? Rather than wearing a bum bag around your waist, the cool way to style it is diagonally across your torso. One strap worn over one shoulder, the other under your other armpit to circle around and fasten at your back.
This is where Kardashian's bag proves controversial as hers is an XL style that spans the entire width of her body, starting at her waist and finishing well below her hips. Similarly, the furry fabric is far from sensible and in complete contradiction to the very intention of a bum bag. Read: practical. But perhaps that's the genius? Another update and reclamation of a much-loved accessory, this time a fashion-forward take.
While Kardashian went for full athleisure-chic in her ensemble, she leant into the impractical elements by adding towering PVC heels and later layering a floor-sweeping fur coat to her look. I mean, why not?
Kardashian's look is giving real "too glam to give a damn" energy and we are here for it.
