These skincare active duos are your secret to glowing skin

I've spent countless hours sifting through products, reading reviews, and trying to understand which ingredients actually make a difference. Finding the perfect skincare routine can feel like a daunting task. With so many products and ingredients, it's hard to know what works best. I've learned that one way to simplify the process is by focusing on powerful ingredient combinations that work synergistically to give you radiant, healthy skin. Certain active duos really stand out and work well with each other. So, keep reading to find out what they do and how they can be your secret to glowing skin.

Vitamin C and vitamin E

Vitamin C is renowned for its brightening properties and ability to even out skin tone. It's a potent antioxidant that neutralises free radicals, which are molecules that damage collagen and cause skin ageing. Vitamin E complements Vitamin C by enhancing its stability and adding extra antioxidant protection. Together, these vitamins help protect your skin from environmental stressors and keep it looking youthful and radiant.

How to use: Look for products that combine these two vitamins or layer them. Apply it in the morning after cleansing and before moisturizing. Don't forget to use sunscreen, as Vitamin C can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Retinol and hyaluronic acid

Retinol, a form of Vitamin A, is a powerhouse ingredient for boosting cell turnover, reducing fine lines, and improving skin texture. However, it can sometimes cause dryness and irritation. That's where hyaluronic acid comes in. This moisture-binding ingredient helps keep your skin hydrated and plump, counteracting the drying effects of retinol.

How to use: Use a retinol product at night, followed by a hyaluronic acid serum or moisturizer. Start with a lower concentration of retinol if you're new to it, and gradually increase as your skin builds tolerance.

Niacinamide and salicylic acid

Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, is a versatile ingredient that helps reduce inflammation, control oil production, and improve skin elasticity. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that exfoliates the skin and clears out pores, making it ideal for acne-prone skin. Together, they create a powerful combination for keeping your skin clear and balanced.

How to Use: Apply a niacinamide serum after cleansing, followed by a salicylic acid treatment. Go for a product that has both. This duo can be used both in the morning and evening. If you experience dryness, use a gentle moisturiser to maintain hydration.

Azelaic acid and alpha arbutin

Azelaic acid is a multifunctional ingredient that helps reduce redness, unclog pores, and improve skin texture. It's particularly effective for those with rosacea or acne. Alpha-arbutin is a brightening agent that reduces hyperpigmentation and dark spots. When used together, these ingredients help even out skin tone and promote a clearer, brighter complexion.

How to use: Apply azelaic acid in the morning and/or evening after cleansing. Follow it up with a product containing alpha-arbutin. Make sure to use sunscreen during the day to protect your skin from UV damage.

Peptides and ceramides

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal your skin to produce more collagen, leading to firmer and more youthful-looking skin. Ceramides are lipids that build the skin's barrier and help lock in moisture. When used together, peptides help build and repair the skin structure, while ceramides ensure the skin barrier is strong and hydrated.

How to use: Incorporate a peptide serum or moisturiser into your routine, followed by a ceramide-rich cream. This combination is especially effective for mature skin or skin that has been damaged by environmental stressors.
