Everything we know about 'The Princess Diaries 3' so far

Are you ready to go back to Genovia? 'Cause we certainly are!

Our weekends took a nostalgic twist when Anne Hathaway announced The Princess Diaries 3 in the best way possible! Remember her iconic "Shut up!" line? Hathaway, who won hearts as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, confirmed her return with a playful Instagram reel. The reel saw her reciting the famous line, along with a caption that read, "Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️‍🔥".

Conversations about The Princess Diaries 3 have been going on for a while now. Over the years, Hathaway even dropped hints about it in interviews, saying that there were discussions taking place behind the scenes. She mentioned that a team was working hard to bring the story back and that she fully supported making a third movie, provided it could live up to the original's charm and appeal. But it wasn't until recently that a third instalment was officially confirmed by Disney. And now it’s finally happening!

Adele Lim, who directed Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon, has been brought on to direct The Princess Diaries 3, and her involvement promises a fresh and modern twist to Mia Thermopolis' royal adventures. In an interview with Variety, Lim shared her excitement, saying, “As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.”

Fans are also eagerly speculating about who from the original cast will return. Although Hathaway’s involvement is already guaranteed, fans will be thrilled to know that Héctor Elizondo is also expected to reprise his role as Joe, Mia’s charming bodyguard. Unfortunately, the former queen Clarisse aka Julie Andrews may not be in this one. While she’s touched by the fans' enthusiasm, Andrews has expressed doubts about her return, citing her age and the potential difficulty of revisiting the role. Initially, there were rumours about Many Moore's return for the third instalment. However, Moore, who played Lana, Mia’s high school bully in the first film, has hinted that she’s unsure about being part of the third instalment. However, she’s open to the idea if her character is written into the story in a way that makes sense.

As for the plot of the film, the details are still very much under wraps. However, reports suggest that the film will pick up where The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement left off, following Mia’s journey as the newly crowned queen of Genovia. Rather than a reboot, this will be a continuation of Mia's royal adventures, something that fans who grew up with the series are likely to appreciate.

The Princess Diaries franchise, directed by the late Garry Marshall, has built a loyal fanbase with the first two films grossing over $300 million worldwide. Now, with the much-anticipated third installment, fans are excited to see Mia’s next royal adventure. While the release date is still unconfirmed, The Princess Diaries 3 promises to be a nostalgic ride for longtime fans along with a fresh experience for the younger generation.
