Emily in Paris is back with season 3 but it’s missing one big detail about Gabriel

Emily in Paris is everyone’s guilty pleasure show. The one we love to hate—touted as insufferable fluff. A New Yorker piece even described the show as “an artefact of contemporary dystopia.” But three seasons in, we can’t stop watching.

Emily and Gabriel together

It may have to do with the fact that the series allows us to explore the grey areas of love and relationships through its characters in a perfectly light-hearted manner and minimises the fallout of heartbreak enough to make it all seem romantic. Paris as the backdrop only goes on to add to the romanticism of all their actions. Through the three seasons, we’ve seen character growth of everyone—Emily making her move to Paris permanent, Mindy fulfilling her goal of becoming a musician, Camille exploring her feelings for people outside Gabriel and finally, Gabriel’s dream of owning his own restaurant inspired by his childhood coming to fruition.

The show finally managed to hit its stride, but it still didn’t cover all its bases with this little detail missing. In a moment so quick you’ll blink and miss it, episode five leaves out an important detail—le beau chef’s last name. The episode titled ‘Ooo La La Liste’ shares a list of the most influential people in Paris and Gabriel scores spot number eight on this list, but he’s also the only person mentioned with no last name. The magazine also goes through the effort of making an entire fake profile dedicated to his cooking, giving a special shout-out to his mussels, but leave out his last name.

Sure, he could be like Beyoncé, Zendaya or Rihanna and have no need for a last name, but that seems unlikely. It’s surprising that after three seasons one of the main characters of the show still doesn’t have a last name, we’ve met his grandmother, Gigi, seen the restaurant he’s named after her, and yet heard no mention of his full name. Was this intentional or did Netflix just forget he’s more than ‘Le Chef Hot’?
