ChatGPT responded to my chats on Hinge and here's how it went

Because why not let a robot handle your love life?

ChatGPT responded to my chats on Hinge and here's how it went

We’ve all had our fair share of experiences with dating apps, where ghosting is as common as swiping right. In a world where artificial intelligence is writing our emails, doing colour analysis for better outfits, picking movies, or even telling us what to eat, I thought why not spice things up a little by letting it handle my love life too?

With ChatGPT as my bestie and wingwoman, I took on this quest with quite a determination. Hoping to find a match in the ocean full of fishes of all kinds, I let my new bestie take the reigns of my hinge profile using its computerised humour, wit and charm. And let’s just say things got interesting.

Imagine this: you’re swiping through your likes and instead of a “Hey, how’s it going?” you are greeted with either a witty opening line or a big, charming paragraph. Well, that’s exactly what happened. Here I was lounging in the AC on a Friday afternoon, my phone in hand letting GPT cook some responses that added a dash of sarcasm and a sprinkle of charm to my conversations.

Trust me, it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. For Every chat and every new match, I had to brief my new AI bestie on the situation so it could craft the perfect reply. The result? A rollercoaster ride of matches, with hilarious, boring, and everything-in-between conversations, and even a spontaneous date. Yes, you read that right. An actual date orchestrated by my new digital wing woman. So, sit tight, because I’m about to give you a peek into my adventures with these intriguing dates, not forgetting the ones that ghosted me.

Mystery guy

This one intrigued me the most. His profile had not one photo where you could see the face, with a caption explaining ‘cause I have better things to provide for’. So to see what all the fuss was about, I texted him using ChatGPT’s help: ‘You're definitely keeping the mystery alive with your profile’. What followed was an unexpectedly captivating conversation. We both joked that he must be the leader of a secret cult dedicated to finding the best food spots. Playing along with the story turned out to be a good decision because he replied to every message with enthusiasm, determined to make me, a mere peasant, an executive member of the cult. He even ended up asking for my number, and I cheekily gave him my email, which led to a formal invite for me to join the cult and a series of good conversations on Instagram.

Coincidence guy

There is not much to say about this one. Coincidently we were in the same area, which compelled me to match with him. Everything was fine. ChatGPT sent decent simple replies, but the conversation did not last long since he made it very clear that he was looking for something casual. And as much as I wanted to continue talking to him, casual was just not my thing.

Ending that conversation with a big sigh, I continued my digital journey, surfing through profiles in search of my next match. If ChatGPT could swipe for me, I’d have gladly accepted that, but instead, I had to endure its overly verbose replies, embarrassment painted all over my face. With that and a mix of curiosity, I started sending likes and replies to different prompts, all crafted by ChatGPT. I cringed and sighed, but this was the experiment. As I braced myself for the inevitable ghosting phase or boring replies like “Haha nice,” I matched with these guys, hoping to find a spark.

The Delhi guy

What can I say about the Delhi guy? The longer the paragraphs ChatGPT sent, the longer his replies were. He first matched with me to point out that one of the videos on my profile didn’t match my prompt. Taking offence, I handed the reins to ChatGPT without giving it much thought. From cheering for India’s T-20 World Cup win to learning about hobbies and the same old “what you’re looking for questions”, ChatGPT tried hard to be smooth with texts like “I’ve been dipping my toes in Hinge waters” or “found any hidden gems or just navigating through the sea of profiles”. Utterly cringe? Absolutely.

He called himself the proper Delhi guy (hence the name) and ranted about his hate-hate relationship with Noida (FYI, that's where I am from) and his love for the chaos Delhi offered. Despite him typing lengthy responses or even showing interest, it didn’t take long for me to realise I wasn’t interested in continuing the conversation.

The freelancer

This was a character in the story for sure. He had an interesting collection of photos, compiled in the name of a profile. Despite my initial hesitation, boredom got the best of me and I decided to respond to the clever text that came my way. ChatGPT being my witty writer came up with the perfect comeback turning this into a fun conversation (seriously, check the images for reference).

Soon, our chat evolved into a lively back-and-forth about his work and how being a ‘freelancer is paying him well’?! That was a first for me. Replies like ‘Oh, come on, don’t be modest! I’m sure you’re a coding wizard 🧙‍♂’ made me wonder if he knows what I’m plotting. We eventually exchanged Instagram handles and that was the end of it.

Well, I did end up going on a date with one of the guys, but that’s a story for another time. Throughout the whole experiment, I couldn’t help but wonder: Are guys really that clueless about computerised texts or do they just not care? If it had been one of my girlfriends, the charade wouldn’t have lasted for long. Yet these guys kept chatting away, oblivious to the AI behind those replies. In the end, While some matches fizzled out sooner, others led to genuinely interesting exchanges.

What did I learn? That ChatGPT can definitely keep things interesting even if it turns into a cringe fest. And guys? Well, they either don’t know AI or don’t care as long as the conversation continues.

Would I recommend letting AI take over your dating app? Maybe for a social experiment, or a good laugh or even when you’re too tired to think of another witty response. But at the end of the day, even though it sounds fun, there is nothing greater than a genuine human connection that no AI can compete with.
