Actors Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine wowed everyone with their rom-com, The Idea of You. The film, centres on Solène (Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mum who begins an unexpected romantic relationship with a 24-year-old boy band singer Hayes Campbell (Galitzine).
Now before you go diving into her latest movie, consider taking a trip down memory lane with some of her unforgettable movies. These include some of her best performances and if you haven’t already watched these, you’re definitely missing out.
The Devil Wears Prada
One of my personal favourites, this movie is, without a doubt, one of Hathaway’s most iconic films. In the film, she plays Andrea (or Andy) Sachs who is hired as an assistant (the new Emily!) to the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly, played by the dynamic Meryl Streep. We laugh and cringe as Andy stumbles through her anxieties, fumbling under pressure thanks to her “dragon lady” of a boss. The film is a delightful blend of comedy and drama, capturing the wild dynamics of working in the fashion industry. Plus it’s quite the eye candy for fashion enthusiasts!
The Intern
Hathaway delivers another captivating performance as Jules Ostin, the founder of a thriving online fashion company whose world turns upside down (or downside up!) after the arrival of a senior intern, Ben played by Robert De Niro. Their unlikely work relationship blossoms into a beautiful friendship, proving that age is just a number. This heartwarming film is a delightful reminder that wisdom and mentorship can come from the most unexpected places, making it a must-watch for anyone who's ever felt underestimated or unsure of their next step.
Rachel Getting Married
Hathaway delivers a powerful performance in this raw and emotional drama. She plays Kym Buchman, a recovering addict who struggles to reconnect with her family amidst the preparations for her sister’s wedding. Hathaway's portrayal of Kym is unforgettable. She captures the character's raw vulnerability, desperate hope, and the constant battle for self-worth with such depth and honesty that it leaves a lasting impression. This film deservedly earned Hathaway an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
One Day
Based on the novel by David Nicholls, this movie won our hearts long before the recently adapted Netflix series of the same. Hathaway plays Emma Morley, whose journey of self-discovery and evolving relationship with Dexter Mayhew unfolds across two decades, on a single day each year.
PS: Prepare to have your heart squeezed while watching this movie (in a good way, we promise... mostly).
The Princess Diaries
You cannot talk about Hathaway’s most iconic films without mentioning The Princess Diaries. This heartwarming rom-com launched her career as she stole hearts with her portrayal of Mia Thermopolis, a seemingly ordinary teenager who is suddenly thrust into the extraordinary world of royalty. The film also truly sparkles thanks to the amazing on-screen chemistry between Hathaway and Julie Andrews, who portrays Mia’s regal grandmother, Queen Clarisse. Their scenes are heartwarming and hilarious, showcasing that a supportive and loving bond can transcend social status. So, if you’re looking for a movie that’s equally funny and heartwarming, The Princess Diaries should be your go-to movie!
