As Gigi Hadid showed on the Anna Sui spring/summer 2016 catwalk, daring to go bolder with your lip colour can be extremely flattering. We asked Bobbi Brown's pro make-up artist Hannah Martin and Esteé Lauder's make-up artist Lynsey Alexander to give us their tips on how to pull off the look.
Pick your shade carefully
"Everyone can wear berry, you just have to find a shade which suits your skin tone," says Martin. The difficulty is choosing which to go for, from the blackberry hues on the S/S 16 catwalks at Anna Sui and Burberry, to the juicy reds at Victoria Beckham and Topshop. "If you're blonde and brave enough, opt for a darker shade," advises Alexander. "Darker skin tones can wear most shades of berry, but a bright red really stands out and makes a statement."
Prepare your lips
To prevent smudging, it's important to exfoliate so that your lips are smooth and soft. We recommend Clinique's Sweet Pots, INR. 1300, which combine a sugar scrub on one side and a soothing balm on the other. For staying power, Alexander believes a liner is essential. "I like to use a lip liner on the top lip to define the cupid's bow" she says.
Add to your cheeks
An important tip we discovered from the make-up artists is to apply some colour to your cheeks too. "To complete the look, opt for a softer shade in the same colour category" says Martin.
