Iconic Music Festival Lollapalooza is Coming to Mumbai Early Next Year

If you’re a melophile who is fuming over not being able to attend concerts or any music festivals in the last two years, here is some news that will put a spring in your step and a 100-watt grin on your face. Early next year, the iconic music festival Lollapalooza is coming to Mumbai. It’s going to be a 2-day long musical affair!

The India leg of this touring music festival will be held in Mumbai on 28 and 29 January 2023. Think 20 hours of live music, fashion, food, and art. While the organizers are being very hush-hush about the rest of the details, like the artists or the venue, we do know that Lollapalooza India will accommodate 60,000 people each day and will feature local as well as global artists.

Lollapalooza was conceived in 1991 by Perry Farrell, the frontman of the alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction. It was originally supposed to be a multi-city farewell tour for the band, with the aim of celebrating everything counter-culture. It was a massive success, and so Perry decided to organize another event in 1992. It was the Coachella of its time, maybe a little more disruptive.

In 1998, though, things began unraveling. Without a headlining artist, the festival was tanking. Then it took another massive hit in 2003-2004. That is when Perry decided to only throw a massive 4-day event in Chicago, which until today has been one of the most-awaited extravaganzas of the year. Over the course of 31 years, Lollapalooza has seen some of the biggest names in the industry grace its stages. From the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Daft Punk, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Kendrick Lamar, and Paul McCartney to Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

Currently, this iconic music festival is held in eight locations around the world- Chicago, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, and Sweden. And now, it’s on its way to making an Asian debut. And if the Indian line-up is anything like Chicago’s, which comprises of names like Metallica, Dua Lipa, Machine Gun Kelly, Glass Animals, Green Day, and Måneskin, then you better apply for your leaves and block your dates because it’s going to be a rager!
