Unless you live under a rock, you must have heard about Argan oil from anyone who follows a beauty regime, must have read about it in articles and found it as an ingredient in most beauty formulations. What is Argan oil?

Colin G. Hall, resident aromatherapist at Paro, says, “It is a potent oil, bursting with high levels of the antioxidant Vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It can be used for the face, body and hair. Argan has been scientifically proven to improve hyperpigmentation, acne not caused by hormonal imbalances, reduce inflammation and redness, improve scarred tissue, nourish very dry and environmentally stressed ageing skin, hair and nails.”

What is the best way to add it to your beauty regime?

Oils do not work like moisturisers, they are known as occlusives, which means they act as a barrier on your skin to trap moisture and prevent it from evaporating. Use it on damp skin so that it seals the moisture on your skin. Since, Argan oil is lightweight, it gets easily absorbed by the skin and leaves a subtle glossy sheen.

If you do not want to look shiny during the day, use it at night after washing your face. However, Hall suggests you use it twice or thrice a day if you want to treat hyperpigmentation, scars or ageing spots. “Pour two to three drops into the palm, spritz with a hydrolat of choice. Spread the oil and hydrolat between the palms then apply to a damp face which has been spritzed with a hydrolat or simple water. Press the palms onto the face then use the fingers to gently spread the remaining oil around the eyes, ears, neck, cheeks, and areas of concern,” adds Hall.

Argan oil can also be used to get rid of dry and chapped lips. Gently massage it on to your lips. If dry skin is one of your major concerns, use the oil to massage the skin before bath or after a shower.

The oil can also be used as an effective yet gentle makeup remover. Since the oil is gentle on the skin and eyes and does not cause any irritation or discomfort, add a few drops of it on a cotton ball and wipe away makeup from your eyes and face.
