Last year, on the 20th anniversary of the first The Princess Diaries movie, its leading star Anne Hathaway posted a fitting throwback to the classic on Instagram by writing "Miracles happen”. Turns out, they do, because how else can someone explain the fact that The Princess Diaries is coming back for a third instalment?

Buckle up friends, we are returning to the world of awkward-to-stunning makeovers, swoon-worthy romantic interests, and epic sleepovers—we’re returning to the kingdom of Genovia.
The film’s first edition was released in 2001 and had Hathaway star as klutzy American teenager Mia Thermopolis who learns that she is the heir to the throne of the (fictional) European kingdom of Genovia. Cue “princess lessons” by her grandmother queen and the drama of navigating high school through it all. Based on Meg Cabot’s YA novel of the same name, the film also featured a stellar cast of Julie Andrews, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Erik von Detten, Hector Elizondo and Sandra Oh. It became an instant box office hit, earning $165.3 million globally and quickly entered into the pop culture hall of fame. Then three years later, the second movie Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement came out and was just as popular.
Though no cast announcement has been made as of yet for the latest instalment and Hathaway does not have a deal to return according to The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the news, she has always expressed publicly that she would love to reprise her breakout role as Mia.
While the late filmmaker Garry Marshall directed the earlier two versions, the new one will see Aadrita Mukerji penning the script with Debra Martin Chase, who was the producer of the two movies, returning to produce. As per sources, the third movie will be a continuation of the beloved 2000s movies instead of being a reboot.
We, for one, can’t wait!
