When it comes to intimate sex positions, there are so many you can choose from—be it the lazy couple’s favourite spooning, or the good ol’s missionary where you get to lovingly gaze into each other’s eyes. Bu you know what is probably the most intensely intimate of them all? The lotus, or the yab-yum position.

The lotus sex position is actually based on the yoga position of the same name, in which you sit cross-legged, but with your feet propped on top of your thighs. This position is common in tantric sex, which is a slower, more meditative way to have sex and connect with your partner.

Why is it so good?

If you’re a hard-core romantic who like the connection and intimacy that sex offers, then you should definitely try the lotus position, it involves a lot of skin-to-skin touch, gazing into each other’s eyes, syncing breath, and a whole lot of intense kissing. The position encourages you to slow down and enjoy the journey and not the destination (the big O). It gives you the chance to connect with your partner on a deeper level and have a more passionate experience.

Why can it be a little challenging?

We’ll be the first ones to admit that for all its romanticism, lotus position is not the easiest to pull off. First of all, both of you need to have incredible hip flexibility to be able to sustain this position—the last thing you want is getting cramps during sexy time. And, the one who’s sitting cross-legged needs to be strong enough to be able to take the weight of their partner. It’s also not a great position for folks who like the in-and-out aspect of intercourse. Grinding or rocking back and forth seems more natural when you’re in this position, so if you’re someone who likes the sensation that thrusting gives, this might not be the best position for you.

How to get it right

To get into the lotus sex position, the partner who’s doing the penetrating sits down on a comfortable, flat surface with their legs crossed. Then the other person sits on their partner’s lap facing them, and wraps their legs around their waist. Both of you can also wrap your arms around each other for even more intimacy, because who wouldn’t like that?

Ways to make it easier

If you’re not feeling too confident about the lotus position, there are variations you can try that make it easier. Switch the bed for a chair or the couch so the person at the bottom has back support and can hold the person straddling them in a better manner. And if you are unable to fall into a rhythm due to the closeness, the partner on the top can lean back and place their hands behind them, letting the other hold your hips for control.
