From ‘80s aristrocratic to dramatic styles, 2024 Met Gala saw the return of the veil

Every year, the Met Gala red carpet produces some of the most fashionable moments that live rent-free in our minds for the rest of the year (sometimes, longer). Last night’s event with the dress code “The Garden of Time” was no different. A-list celebrities joined forces in New York City to pay homage to this theme in the most creative ways possible. Almost everyone who walked up the stairs of the Met brought something unexpected and dramatic to the carpet and we can’t get enough. 

Here’s the thing though, it’s not just about the ensemble the celebrity is wearing. What makes a look MET-worthy is also how they choose to accessorise the outfit. And this year, the one particular accessory we spotted numerous times on the red carpet is the veil. Amid crazy headgears and gowns with gravity-defying or 3D features, several attendees (think—Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and others) opted for an accessory as simple as a veil to accentuate the drama and intrigue in their outfits.

Zendaya     

For her first walk up the Met steps this year, co-chair Zendaya donned a one-shoulder blueish-green gown by Maison Margiela’s John Galliano. The stunning dress was the ideal blend of whimsy and drama. However, it was the headpiece with a hand-painted emerald green veil (which almost looked like a bird’s nest) that lent the outfit a sense of mystery and edge. Her outfit featured faux grapes, a little bird perched on her shoulder and a long feather in her hair. If villain-chic was a trend, this would be the outfit that set the bar and it’s high. 

Rosalia    

The Spanish singer-songwriter walked the Met Gala carpet in a Dior Haute Couture ensemble that comprised a black strapless peplum top with a long trail and a matching column skirt. She further elevated this mob-wife-at-a-funeral outfit by accessorising it with a netted veil that brought an additional oomph factor to this look. 

Lana Del Ray    

Lana Del Ray’s beige and strapless Alexander McQueen gown was one of the night's most creative looks. Following the event’s theme, her dress featured twigs all over, complete with a crown of branches (which looked like antlers) covered with a long and dramatic veil. It was an ethereal look giving the Summertime Sadness singer a forest fairy vibe.  

Sydney Sweeney   

The Euphoria star looked unrecognisable at the Met Gala as she debuted in a jet-black wig which is quite a change from her signature blonde hair. She opted for a powder-blue Cinderella-esque Miu Miu gown featuring all-over flower appliques. However, what caught our eye was her sheer embellished veil which was custom-made by Jennifer Behr. It reportedly featured over 2,000 hand-applied Swarovski crystals. This veil elevated the entire look by adding a sense of intrigue.
