It takes a quick glance through social media to know that today’s fashion is all about bending gendered boundaries and slipping into whatever feels the most like yourself. And this is not just limited to the gram. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon for a Bollywood actor to strut down a red carpet in a skirt or a female influencer to wear a sherwani instead of the conventional lehenga. The lines are starting to get hazier by the day and what better time to celebrate this than during Pride Month?
This blurring of boundaries teaches us that fashion is more than mere outfits, it's about feeling comfortable in your skin, and self-expressionism. When we asked designer Mayyur Girotra what freedom in fashion meant to him, he said, "Freedom in fashion, to me means the ability to express oneself without fear of judgment or restriction. It’s about breaking away from societal norms and embracing individuality. Fashion should be a reflection of one’s inner self, allowing people to wear what makes them feel confident and authentic. It is about creating and wearing designs that resonate personally - regardless of traditional labels or expectations. True freedom in fashion celebrates diversity and encourages everyone to explore and express their unique identity boldly and unapologetically."
