Naked dresses, butts, and butt cracks were at the centre of Met Gala 2024 fashion

What could be more timeless than your birthday suit?

It's been a few hours since Met Gala 2024 concluded, and our Instagram feeds are brimming with breathtaking celebrity looks. With Alia Bhatt in a stunning Sabyasachi sari, Isha Ambani in an elaborate Rahul Mishra gown, and Mindy Kaling in a gorgeous structured gown by Gaurav Gupta, there's plenty of inspiration for us to keep our eyes peeled for all Met Gala content. And then there's some more! This year, the red carpet saw a plethora of naked dresses, blending a bit of femininity and courage!

The naked dressing trend has been around for a while now, exhibiting itself in a myriad of artistic (and must we say strategic!) ways. From Kendall Jenner in a Maison Margiela Artisanal 2024 silk-chiffon lace dress at the Oscars after-party to Doja Cat in a Dilara Findikoglu sheer and daring number, the trend has seen many celebrities embracing it on the red carpet.

And while we're talking trends, it's safe to credit this bold feminine energy back to Cher who started it all in her two Bob Mackie dresses at the 1974 Met Gala and the 1988 Academy Awards. And the rest, they say, is history.

If we ever needed further reminding about the naked trend and butt cracks being a thing now, one witnessed some of the best see-through looks at the Met Gala held last night.

Jennifer Lopez

Lopez, a co-chair of fashion‘s biggest night, wore what one can certainly call her most daring Met Gala look till date. She went down the sheer route in a form-fitting gown covered in silver pearls and rhinestones by Schiaparelli Haute Couture. Fitting her curves perfectly like a glove and taking naked dressing to new heights, the strapless dress had more than 2.5 million bugles and beads hand-embroidered into it.

Kendall Jenner

The model arrived at the Met Museum in a never-worn-before archival Givenchy Couture gown which was made 25 years ago when Alexander McQueen was with the fashion house. Made out of nude and black tulle, the dress was covered with 1,00,000 black and brass beads and sequins, which were hand-embroidered for more than 500 hours. While she looked stunning in a piece of history, the gown came with a risqué butt cutout. Did she just take Kim Kardashian's hip cleavage in a Gucci dress to a whole new level? We think so! Whether or not celebrities are able to crack the butt cutout trend, it definitely took center stage at Met Gala 2024.

Emily Ratajkowski

Why play it safe when you can rock a sheer dress like Ratajkowski and show off your derrière? She wore a see-through long-sleeved gown with crystal petals, that goes back to Versace’s 2001 fall-winter collection revealing a lot of skin on both sides. Ratajkowski, a diva known to have fully embraced naked and sheer dressing, elevated her brash and bold naked look as the crystalised,semi-transparent dress featured an open back and a patterned see-through skirt. She ate and left no crumbs.

Rita Ora

The actor made a sheer statement on the red carpet by wearing an outfit that was one of the most colourful and certainly one of the most revealing naked looks of the evening. She wore a completely open-sided Marni dress that was made entirely from beads which hung in the front and back and had high slits. The kaleidoscopic beads were sourced from North Africa and Europe. And if you thought that was the only thing she wore, well look again and look closely. You'd notice that she was actually clad in an all-nude-coloured body stocking. How's that for a magic trick?

Dua Lipa

The singing sensation made heads turn (and how) wearing a feathered cape over a see-through lace set. The Grammy winner was decked in a black feathered cape draped across her shoulders, huge earrings, and a lacy-all Marc Jacobs black skirt and corset, that drew inspiration from lingerie and boudoir style. She surely seems to be a huge fan of the trend as she attended the perfectly pink Barbie premiere last year in a silver see-through naked dress and also turned up at the Time100 Gala this April in a see-through Chanel gown.

Elle Fanning

One wouldn’t be surprised if they thought Elle Fanning was an ice princess attending the Met Gala. The actor, after all, looked gorgeous as ever in a glassy translucent gown by Balmain that made it look like it was made from glass. The outfit, brimming with flowers, and featuring a long tulle train, flowed elegantly behind her as she climbed the Met stairs.

Doja Cat

It wasn’t the Met Gala, but the wet gala for Doja Cat as she was dripping in style (quite literally) wearing a sheer water-soaked outfit that revealed more than it hid (including her butt) due to its translucent nature and also saw her cover her breasts as she posed for the paparazzi. The T-shirt dress was designed by VETEMENTS creative director Guram Gvasalia, with whom Doja walked the red carpet. The wet look went perfectly well with her sparkly black mascara that dripped down her cheeks to portray that her dress was soaked in her tears.

Janelle Monáe

The singer and actor continues to innovate with her daring fashion choices. Her very latest look saw her stunning at the Met Gala in a custom shell-sequined gown by Vera Wang. The skin-revealing outfit was made of holographic discs that hugged her svelte figure and had handmade flowers made from recycled plastic bottles. Along with featuring waist cutouts and a plunging neckline, what stood out was the 3D appliqué that covered her collarbones.

FKA Twigs

The British singer, songwriter, and dancer made a show-stopping appearance at the Met Gala as she sizzled in a bold Stella McCartney outfit. Known to be a celeb who's always recognised for her daring, yet sustainable, fashion choices, she wore a cream knit cloak made from loops of responsibly sourced wool. This was paired with a pink embellished crop top and matching hot pants that dazzled her legs. Her look was another brilliant example of the naked dress trend, where the illusion mesh fabric blends seamlessly with the wearer's skin tone. You may see her image countless times and still won't be able to discern where the delicate rhinestone-embellished mesh begins or ends. Safe to say, the naked and sheer dress trend isn't ending anytime soon.
