The making of a classic Canadian tuxedo typically features straight-leg jeans paired with a fitted denim or trucker jacket. However, as seen during the Spring/Summer '25 fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, New York, and London, there’s now plenty of room for creative styling and fresh variations. From pop star Taylor Swift to heritage luxury brand Louis Vuitton, everyone is elevating their denim game.

The way we wear denim is always evolving—from utility dungarees to vintage bootcut jeans, high-fashion corsets to summery Bermuda shorts, and button-down shirt dresses to bleached mini skirts, all have been part of the denim renaissance. The origin of the denim-on-denim style known as the Canadian tuxedo dates back to the 1950s in fashion history. It all started with iconic American singer Bing Crosby, who visited Vancouver in an all-denim outfit that was considered too casual and inappropriate at the time. Soon after, brands like Levi's and fashion change-makers like Princess Diana joined the double-denim gang, leading to a pop culture trend. This trend has travelled through decades, commonly seen on artists at the VMAs, like Britney Spears and Beyoncé in the early 2000s, and now on Instagram celebrities like Shanaya Kapoor and Mira Rajput Kapoor. It’s also runway season, where luxury designer lines like Ralph Lauren, Victoria Beckham, Moschino, Carolina Herrera, Dior, and Schiaparelli are bringing an edgy, experimental look to the cyclical double denim trend.

The beauty of the Canadian tuxedo comeback is that you might already have the essential components in your wardrobe. Don’t hesitate to style any denim items you own together—and remember, the more denim, the better! Use these tips to elevate your denim game:

Proportion play

Bring out your Zara wide-leg or baggy jeans, and pair them with a cinched denim shacket (a hybrid between a shirt and a jacket) or blazer to create a streamlined silhouette. The contrast between oversized and tailored pieces adds visual interest and keeps the look urban and flattering. For a feminine twist, swap out the jeans for a denim skirt—especially an A-line or fitted silhouette—and pair it with a boxy, oversized trucker jacket. For a Y2K touch, try DIY bedazzled pockets or quirky patchwork to add different focal points to your double-denim outfit.

Head-to-toe denim

An all-denim look might sound a little OTT, but when done right, it creates a head-turning fashion moment. If you’re going for a head-to-toe denim look, let your accessories play a supportive role rather than overpowering the outfit. A small denim crossbody bag or belt in a slightly different shade will complement your look without being too matchy-matchy. Denim shoes—like sneakers, boots, or even pumps—can tie your outfit together without overshadowing the ensemble. Opt for shoes in a different denim texture or wash to add contrast while keeping the look cohesive.

Layered denim textures and washes

Pairing different washes—like a light-wash denim jacket with dark-wash jeans—adds depth and dimension to your outfit. The contrast prevents the look from feeling flat, highlighting each piece while maintaining overall cohesion. Mixing not just washes but also textures can enhance an all-denim ensemble. Combine distressed or faded denim jeans with a clean, structured dark indigo jacket, or play between worn-in and pristine fabrics for a look that's edgy and layered.

Non-denim add-ons

A bold leather or metallic belt is a cool way to break up an all-denim look. Whether it’s a wide belt with a chunky buckle or something more intricate, this accessory creates a focal point that draws attention to the waist, adding polish and structure to your outfit. If you prefer layers, introduce a pop of colour with a non-denim piece, such as a bright turtleneck, a printed blouse, or a graphic tee under your denim jacket. This layering technique not only breaks up the denim-on-denim aesthetic but also adds vibrancy, making the look more playful and youthful.
