Bhumi Pednekar recently showed up for an event in a saree with a glass body plate by Raw Mango that left the internet rather amused. A while ago, Shilpa Shetty too was seen wearing a Mugler gown with a waist plate, from the brand’s SS24 collection—a look that was also pulled off by Brazilian singer Anitta and Thai actress Davika on different occasions. A throwback post of Shetty’s look is garnering all the attention right now, becoming a source of amusement for many on the internet as they are left baffled by the style.
Time and again, body plates have been reinvented in fashion. Be it the bust moulds by Yves Saint Laurent in the ‘60s or the futuristic motorcycle corsets by Thierry Mugler in the ‘90s, exuding power through these isn’t a new phenomenon. With corpcore having such a moment, it’s evident women are drifting towards more power dressing. This is why, the style which has been gradually mushrooming over the past couple of years— with Bella Hadid and Zendaya advocating various interpretations of body plate—has taken things up a notch lately.
Mugler evidently has been in love with body plates and has reinvented that passion in their SS24 collection with a plethora of looks boosting the same.
Meanwhile, Markgong took inspiration from the powerful, relentless and unabashed character of Miranda from Sex and the City to craft the SS24 collection, featuring body plates with a dash of femininity.
Alia Bhatt too recently paired a metal cast breastplate with black trousers by Gaurav Gupta as she made her Paris Fashion Week debut this year.
While we have seen the metallic versions of body plates, the internet hasn’t been reacting quite well to the clear ones, as worn by Pednekar and Shetty. These looks have become fodder for memes, and we wonder if this is the start of a new trend that India is taking time to warm up to or will it be one of those that never become the norm.
