THIS is the Real Reason Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon Broke Up 20 Years Ago

Yes, today he is revered as one of the most doting husbands and a loving family man, but it is after years of being known to be frivolous in love, that Akshay Kumar managed to break his reputation. His list of romantic escapades with the leading ladies of Bollywood is pretty long, not to mention scandalous.

While it's quite well-known that Akshay Kumar was responsible for breaking Shilpa Shetty's heart and leaving her devastated for long, not many know that before that, Akshay was romantically involved with another co-star with whom he had a sizzling chemistry on screen!

Turns out, their chemistry was spot-on off-screen just as well as it was in front of the camera. Their love blossomed with the release of their film Mohra in 1994, and Akshay and Raveena were often spotted together. Hailing from the same Punjabi culture, everybody speculated an impending wedding.

After a hiatus, Raveena Tandon revealed on a chat show that she had decided to quit the industry for the sake of her husband who wanted her to be a homemaker. "It was a voluntary decision. I was engaged to somebody I knew. This is what I wanted, to lead a very normal life. I quit in advance before marriage because we did think that when there will be last day of my shoot, we will go ahead and get married. Once I re-started my career, he again said that leave it and we will go ahead with the wedding. But, then I told him that once I chose you over my career, but now I will choose my career over you. "

When the host asked her if they were already married, Raveena said,

"No, there was a very elaborate engagement ceremony. With the pandit doing pooja and everything. His family had flown down from Delhi, my family came from Delhi. One of his elders had put a red dupatta on my head, and I think that was mistaken to be a wedding."

Things took an ugly turn when there were stories of Akshay's link-up with his then co-star Rekha, and he eventually cheated on Raveena with her best-friend Shilpa Shetty. In one interview, Raveena was quite open about her estranged relationship, and why she let go of him.

"We started off as friends. We got to know each other only when we went together for a few shows in America and Canada. I think loyalty meant a lot to me, but I did not mean so much to him. He expected me to forgive and take him back every time. I did that for three years, until it was the last round."

In another interview with Stardust in 1999, Raveena let out details of what all happened when they were dating. She admitted that Akshay and she had got engaged secretly in a temple. According to her, since Akshay had a fear of losing his career and female-fans, he did not let their engagement news to be public at that time. She even went on to say that "Akshay proposes to every girl and the speed on which he is going, he will soon have to address the parents of three-fourth of girls in Mumbai as 'Mom and Dad'".

Much like Shilpa Shetty did later, Raveena too, maintained a cordial stance with the ladies who Akshay was seeing, because she felt that she couldn't really blame any other woman for her break-up since it was her man who was not loyal.

Today, both of them are happily married to their respective partners, and are proud parents of their children. But, even now they resist making public appearances, or signing up a film together.

Even if they eventually moved on, the bitter after-taste of their ugly break-up, has drowned all hopes of their fans to ever see them share screen space, again. A beautiful love-story, with a sad death.
