If talking about change for the better in films is concerned, few would be a better face than Ayushmann Khurrana. Over the years, the actor has proved just how much he cares, and wants people to, through his many roles that touch upon a social issue prevalent all around us. Continuing to not just talk the talk, but walk the walk as well, Khurrana was recently roped in by Signature Packaged Drinking Water where he starred in an ad film that elevates the very cause of living good while doing good for nature.

The actor, in an exclusive interview with Cosmopolitan India, talks about his strong bond with nature, practising a minimalist lifestyle, and ensuring that his movies do the same and much more.

Cosmopolitan India: The association with Signature Packaged Drinking Water promotes the motto 'Live good and do good' and promotes eco-consciousness. How strongly do you believe in it, and how do you try to follow it in your life?

Ayushmann Khurrana: Having grown up in Chandigarh, one of India's cleanest and most organized cities I have always been deeply connected to nature. So, growing up, we were naturally made aware of waste segregation and mindful living. Even at home, we were bought up in a certain way where we purchased only what was required—rarely were we indulgent, so that is still my core. Growing up near the beautiful Shivalik ranges of the Himalayas, I developed a strong bond with nature, witnessing the minimalist lifestyle practiced by the Himachali people. Combining their folk music with my original tunes and words grounded me in music and creativity, reinforcing my connection with my roots. Sustainable living is not just a lifestyle; it's a healthier way of being, and I try to practice it to the best of my abilities.

CI: We saw that your film 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui' had a zero-waste film set, and now your ad follows eco-consciousness. Such small acts of ‘Do Good’ make a lasting impact. What are your thoughts?

AK: It's truly empowering to be part of projects where we create film sets and shoots without waste, setting an example of recycling and reusing in our everyday lives. By taking small yet significant steps in preserving nature, we are doing good and contributing to a positive change. Over the years, I've witnessed film sets evolve to make sustainable changes, and the concept of a zero-waste set is a huge step in the right direction.

CI: What are some sustainable habits your parents and grandparents practiced that you later realized were truly beneficial?

AK: I think, most of the generations before us which include our parents and grandparents unknowingly practised many sustainable habits that were not explicitly labelled as such but were incredibly eco-friendly and healthy. They were conscious about diligently turning off lights and fans when not in use, buying only what is necessary, using steel and glass containers which are nature-friendly choices rather than plastic, and repairing damaged things rather than throwing them away. These practices, though not explicitly called sustainable, were nature-friendly and had a positive impact on the environment. Exactly the kind of practices Signature Packaged Drinking Water encourages green seekers to follow across.

CI: Your movies always advocate for the audience and consumers to make informed decisions. As far as sustainable fashion is concerned, how do you encourage conscious consumerism?

AK: I think, growing up I have always been particular in my fashion choices and I do enjoy experimenting with fashion. However, I am lucky that in my line of work, I can enjoy wearing different couture and styles without owning these garments. Personally, I am a minimalist. My wardrobe is limited and I don’t mind repeating clothes. And if I like something, I usually repeat them.

CI: Are you an over-shopper when it comes to fashion, or do you shop less but better?

AK: My personal style is minimalist, low-key, and comfortable.

CI: Which is your favourite destination when it comes to nature doing the healing?

AK: I like going to the foothills of the Himalayas even now. I find them soothing and calming. I enjoy walking through the pathways of these hills. I also love the tri-junction of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, the forest of Coorg, and Mudumalai Life Sanctuary. Our country is beautiful, full of flora and fauna.
