One of the best things about travelling is the journey to the destination, and if you ask us, flying is usually an exciting way to get there. Unfortunately, it is not without its downside. Travelling by plane can seriously mess with your skin. The combination of dry cabin air, recycled air, and lack of humidity can make your skin feel dull and dehydrated, even if you have oily skin. However, with a few simple skincare hacks, you can enjoy healthy, glowing skin even at 30,000 feet high. Read on to know how.
Stay hydrated
One of the most important things you can do for your skin during a flight is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight and avoid consuming too much alcohol and caffeine, as they can dehydrate your skin. Consider bringing a reusable water bottle on board so you can refill it whenever needed.
Cleanse before you fly
Start your in-flight skincare routine with a clean slate. Remove any make-up and cleanse your face thoroughly before boarding the plane. This will help prevent clogged pores and allow your skin to breathe during the flight. But be sure to use a gentle cleanser that won't strip your skin of essential oils and moisture.
Make sure to moisturise
Moisturising your skin will help it fight the dry air in the cabin. Pack a hydrating moisturiser in your carry-on bag and apply it liberally throughout the flight. Look for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides to lock in moisture and keep your skin soft and supple.
Sheet masks for added hydration
If you need an extra boost of hydration mid-flight, try using a sheet mask. These are convenient and mess-free, making them perfect for skincare on the go. Choose a hydrating sheet mask packed with ingredients like aloe vera or hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture and revive tired skin. Just remember to remove the mask after 15-20 minutes to prevent your skin from over-drying.
Protect your lips and hands
Don't forget to care for your lips and hands during the flight. Apply lip balm to hydrate your lips every few hours and use a rich hand cream to prevent dryness and cracking. You can also wear gloves over your hand cream to maximise absorption and lock in moisture.
Refresh with a facial mist
A facial mist can be a lifesaver during a long flight. Spritzing your face with a hydrating mist can instantly refresh your skin and give you a much-needed burst of moisture. Choose a mist that contains soothing ingredients like rosewater or cucumber extract for a calming effect.
Skip heavy make-up
Avoid wearing heavy make-up during a flight, as it can clog your pores and further dryness. Instead, opt for a light-tinted moisturiser or a BB cream. Also, be sure to focus on skincare products that nourish and protect your skin.
Combat puffy eyes
Flying can cause fluid retention, which leads to puffy under-eyes. In order to avoid/cure this, use cooling eye masks or patches. Look for products infused with caffeine or cucumber extract to reduce the swelling and brighten the under-eye area.
Remember to use SPF
Yes, UV rays can penetrate through plane windows. And at that altitude, believe us it is much more dangerous. So it's important to protect your skin with sunscreen, especially on long flights. Choose a lightweight, broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 40 or higher and reapply as needed throughout the flight.
Relax and Enjoy Your Flight
Lastly, don't forget to relax and enjoy your flight. Stress can impact your skin negatively, so take deep breaths, listen to calming music, and get some rest onboard. A relaxed mind and body will reflect positively on your skin, leaving you with radiant and refreshed skin.
