Despite it being a flight where you're well above 30,000 feet above the ground, the journey isn't always smooth sailing as far as your skin is concerned. It may be the fastest way to go from one place to another, but it can also be one of the fastest ways for your skin to have an imbalance. With there being low humidity all around, one having to sit in dry cabins, and recycled air to breathe, one can reduce ample skin damage during and after the flight with a few simple steps.

Low humidity levels

The combination of low humidity and dry, recycled air on an airplane can lead to skin dehydration and irritation. This can make your skin feel dry and potentially worsen conditions like eczema. However, it's important to note that the impact on your skin is generally not significant unless the humidity is excessively high or low. Also, since most people don't spend prolonged periods in airplanes on a daily basis, the overall impact on your skin is limited.

What to do?

To mitigate any potential effects, you should keep your skin hydrated on the flight. Additionally, practising your skincare routine before and after the flight will help it limit the damage. Even the basic routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturising, can help maintain the health of your skin.

Here are some tips you need to follow to help protect your skin while flying:

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight to stay hydrated. It's important to keep your body well-hydrated to maintain skin moisture.

Moisturise: Apply a generous amount of moisturiser on your face and body before the flight. Look for products that are rich in hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. Consider using a thicker moisturiser or an occlusive balm to create a protective barrier that prevents moisture loss.

Avoid excessive make-up: Minimise the use of make-up during your flight, as it can further dehydrate your skin. If you prefer to wear make-up, opt for lightweight, hydrating formulas and make sure to cleanse your face before applying them.

Facial mists: Carry a travel-sized hydrating facial mist with you to spritz your face during the flight. Look for mists that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or rose water.

Humidify your personal space: Consider using a personal humidifier or placing a damp towel near your seat to add moisture to the air around you. This can help combat the dryness in your immediate vicinity.

Lip care: Apply a nourishing lip balm or lip mask to keep your lips moisturised throughout the flight. Reapply if your lips feel dry or chapped.

Protect your eyes: Airplane air can cause dryness and discomfort to the eyes. To protect your eye area and to keep your eyes moist, consider wearing glasses and using lubricating eye drops.

Dress comfortably: Opt for loose, breathable clothing during your flight to minimise friction and irritation on your skin. Natural fabrics like cotton can help your skin breathe better.

Avoid touching your face: Airplane surfaces can harbour bacteria and germs. Avoid the risk of transferring any bacteria from your hands to your skin by not touching your face too often. This will reduce the possibility of a potential breakout or infection.

Pack right: Pack travel-sized skincare essentials such as cleansers, hydrating serums, and moisturisers to use during and after your flight. Consider products that are specifically formulated to provide hydration and nourishment to the skin.
