This "Game of Thrones" Fan Theory Predicts a Major Prophecy Is About to Come True

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season 7 of Game of Thrones.

In the three episodes of Season 7 broadcast so far, Game of Thrones has already hinted at several prophecies that could be fulfilled soon. One specific prophecy has been weighing heavily on the minds of Game of Thrones fans: Who is Azor Ahai? If you need a refresher, Azor Ahai—also referred to as the Prince (or Princess) That Was Promised—was a legendary hero who once wielded a powerful sword called Lightbringer, and it is prophesized that they will be reborn to challenge the Others and defeat the darkness.

"There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world," says the prophecy of Azor Ahai from the ancient books of Asshai. "In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him." In the show's most recent episode "The Queen's Justice," Melisandre mentions that she has succeeded in bringing "fire and ice together," thus completing her hand in the prophecy.

While the words "Azor Ahai" have never actually been mentioned on the show, The Prince That Was Promised is often referenced, notably by Melisandre after she brought Jon Snow back from the dead in Season 6. "The Lord let you come back for a reason. Stannis was not the Prince Who Was Promised, but someone has to be," the Red Priestess said after realizing she was wrong in her initial prediction that Stannis Baratheon was the PTWP.

According to the prophecy, Azor Ahai was the hero chosen to defend the world in a time of darkness. But, in order to become this hero, he had to forge a hero's sword. On his first attempt, he worked for 30 days and 30 nights to create the sword, but it broke when he tried to temper it in water. For his second attempt, he worked for 50 days and 50 nights. To temper the sword this time, he captured a lion and drove the sword through its heart, but the steel shattered.

Finally, with a heavy heart, the hero knew what he had to do and spent 100 days and nights forging another sword. On the final day, he called his wife, Nissa Nissa, in and asked her to bare her chest to him. Azor Ahai took the newly forged sword and stabbed it through her heart, tempering the steel and combining her soul with the sword, creating Lightbringer. It is said in the Jade Compendium that, should Azor Ahai thrust the sword through a monster, it will burst into flames.

Now, it is said that Azor Ahai will be reborn again as a champion sent by the Lord of Light, R'hllor, to defend their people. Should Azor Ahai fail to defeat this darkness with Lightbringer in their hands, the world fails with them. So, even if somehow the prophesied hero has been reborn and they happen to come across the magical sword destined to help them battle the forces of evil surrounding them, they still might fail? Yikes.

Recently, Redditor matttwee shared his or her fan theory explaining not only who they think Azor Ahai is, but also that the identity of this incredible hero has actually already been revealed.

It's already been proven that Daenerys fits the bill for the second part of the Azor Ahai prophecy. "When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone." Born on Dragonstone, near the narrow sea (amidst salt) and reborn as the Mother of Dragons on Khal Drogo's funeral pyre (amdist smoke), Daenerys hatched her three dragon eggs on the pyre (wake dragons out of stone).

That same morning, the Red Comet appeared in the sky for the first time (when the red star bleeds), giving fans every reason to believe that she is, in fact, Azor Ahai or The Princess That Was Promised. Additionally, a woods witch in the books predicts that the PTWP would be born from the line of Prince Aerys and Princess Rhaella, who just so happen to be Dany's parents.

What makes this particular theory so plausible is the huge connection this fan points out with Daenerys and the water and the lion. Game of Thrones is known for being pretty heavy-handed on the symbolism, so it's not stretching that far to think that the naval battle in "Stormborn"—water—and the battle at Casterly Rock in "The Queen's Justice"—the Lannister lion—represent something far more than simple losses for Daenerys. These could be her hero's attempts at metaphorically forging a sword to defeat the darkness around her, suggesting that Daenerys is actually Azor Ahai.

This leaves the question of how Daenerys will carry out the third and final part of the prophecy. While she doesn't have a Nissa Nissa to speak of, there are people in her life who are important to her and who she cares for—namely Jorah Mormont. Or it could even be one of her beloved dragons. While it could be possible that Daenerys will end up sacrificing one of them or someone else in her group to fulfill the prophecy, it's still unclear exactly what that will entail and what the show is using as a stand in for the literal sword known as Lightbringer.

So, will the Mother of Dragons have to sacrifice someone close to her to fulfill the prophecy and save her people? Well, this is Game of Thrones, so it's probably safe to say the final reveal of Azor Ahai is going to be a bloody one.
