Here's Why Women Need to Boost Their Protein Intake

Protein—often referred to as the ‘building block of life’—is required by the human body to fuel energy, repair old cells, and generate new ones. The macronutrient helps carry oxygen via the blood and creates antibodies that keep illnesses at bay. As for women, higher amounts of protein consumption are essential; women are prone to greater bone loss as they age and protein contributes to sufficient bone power and density—it makes for roughly 50 per cent of bone volume and approximately 33 per cent of its mass.

"Female bodies demand varying levels of protein at different stages of life, especially during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding women require about two times as much protein as non-pregnant, non-nursing women since the nutrients help maximize breast milk production and enhance infant growth and development. As per a survey, nearly half per cent of women aged 18 to 50 don't know if they are consuming enough protein,” explains Sahil Mehta, Managing Director and Founder, MuscleXP.

Wondering what happens to your body due to insufficient protein intake? Read on:

Stress Fractures

Besides calcium, our bones require protein. Our bones undergo constant restoration and to support and sustain this process the body demands an adequate supply of protein. When protein supply is inadequate, our vital organs and the body are compelled to borrow the nutrient from other areas, including the protein stored in our skeletal muscle tissue. And the dearth of protein in the skeletal muscle tissue can make our bones more prone to injuries such as fractures.

Hair Loss and Brittle Nails

Keratin, found in our skin, hair, and nails, is a form of protein and is responsible for delivering strength and structure. Collagen is another type of protein found in abundance across our bodies, one that ensures our skin remains firm and supple. Elastin, another form of protein, allows the many tissues in the body to return to their original shape after being stretched. However, with an insufficient supply of protein, skin quality, hair, and nails get compromised.

Weak Immune System

Protein is needed to build a healthy immune system. It is one of the pillars that help generate antibodies to fight off bacteria and viruses. And without these antibodies, bacteria and viruses would be free to roam and infect your body with diseases.
