"High Chances of India Suffering From a Third Covid-19 Wave," Says an Expert

As the nation experiences temporary relief from the deadly SARS-CoV-2, the healthcare system is gearing up for a potential third wave of coronavirus expected to hit later in the year. Reeling under the impact—and widespread devastation—caused by the second-wave, an SBI report said, "A third wave of Covid-19 could be just as severe as the second wave, and can last up to 98 days."

According to Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, CEO and MD of Fortis Healthcare Ltd., during the first wave occupancy levels were at 25-29%, while during the second wave the levels went up to 69%-70%. By next month, expect Covid-19 related revenue to fall down to 10-15% from the peak of 45%, with non-covid recovery to be faster; already seeing initial signs of pent up demand. He also added that the efficiency of the healthcare sector is witnessing a gradual improvement, with Fortis, also, in the process of installing its own oxygen plants in almost all hospitals.

Speaking of immunisation across the country, he states that while inconsistencies in government policies may have hampered the pace and reach of the vaccine, "India is likely to meet 70% of the total target by December." Public and private institutions are capable of ramping up vaccination, however, the pace is unlikely to pick up in the short term. At the same time, he is of the belief that there are high chances of India suffering from a third wave of Covid-19 infection.

The second wave of the virus exposed India's lack of healthcare infrastructure and forced stakeholders to ramp up investments. To prepare and overcome a probable third wave, India requires a proper mechanism to regulate healthcare infrastructure and oversee the medical needs of the widespread population. "Fortis is targeting to add 1300 beds in the next three to five years and is looking for major organic expansions and acquisitions," concludes Mr. Raghuvanshi.
